UC San Diego’s involvement could catalyze I.D.E.A. District
As outlined by the Union-Tribune’s Roger Showley, there is exciting talk about UCSD considering creation of a “collaboration laboratory” in downtown’s East Village where students and faculty could research solutions to urban problems, put on artistic performances and exhibitions and offer classes to the general population through UCSD Extension.
Jim Chappell, former president of San Francisco Planning and Urban Research and who attended a forum this week at which the UCSD idea was discussed, was spot on when he said, “What we (the I.D.E.A. District) need is a catalyst that is so unique and so surprising and so compelling that the project simply has to happen.”
The UCSD collaboration lab could easily be that catalyst.
